All Volkswagen cars with the new generation infotainment system will also be fitted with ChatGPT’s artificial intelligence (AI). This feature is available on all new electric vehicles with the ID. nameplate as well as the new Golf, Tiguan and Passat. The functionality is in addition to VW’s IDA voice assistant.

New features include the ability to have search results narrated to the user as well as the ability to interact with the car using up to five languages. The newly integrated tool can also respond to questions from the driver/passengers and “provide information on tourist attractions, report on past football tournaments or help solve maths problems.” The system works by employing IDA first for any voice requests, only if IDA cannot assist then the query is forwarded anonymously to ChatGPT to answer. The response is also spoken in a “familiar Volkswagen voice”.

Volkswagen have also clarified that ChatGPT does not have access to the vehicle data and questions & answers are deleted immediately. For those not comfortable with this, the voice assistant can be deactivated from the settings menu or the Volkswagen app or the infotainment system’s privacy menu.
