A Moody Little Crossover – Lexus LBX Range Review

The all-new Lexus LBX, the smallest SUV ever from Lexus, is out to introduce a new audience to the brand with its compact and urban-centric design and attractive price point. This little crossover stands as a breakthrough model to the Lexus lineup, offering a unique blend of luxury, efficiency, and practicality. To help us delve into the details of this intriguing addition to the Lexus family, they gave us almost the entire range to play with.

The Lexus LBX is the second nameplate in Lexus’ history to come with three letters, the LFA being the first, meaning that theoretically it has big shoes to fill. However, it’s also their smallest SUV to date so ‘fill them’ it doesn’t. It’s also not as powerful, has more seats and, well I think you get the point. But it also doesn’t come with a horrific price tag, so this chirpy little SUV is out to attract newcomers to the luxury brand.

Along with a new(ish) moniker, Lexus have taken a different step towards trim names for the LBX, out goes premium, limited and F-Sport and in comes (in ascending order) Active, Relax and Cool, with all three ‘moods’ having Front Wheel Drive variants and the Relax and Cool offering AWD options too.

When it comes to looks and aesthetics, the LBX boasts unmistakable Lexus styling cues with the signature spindle grille (albeit the top is now part of the bonnet), sleek LED DRLs, and a chic blend of chrome accents. Its compact dimensions of 4.2m length, 1.56m height, and 1.8m width make it a perfect fit for urban adventures, and in fairness make it more of a high-riding hatch than an out and out SUV.

The 18-inch wheels with a 55-profile provide a comfortable and stylish ride, regardless of the tarmac below while the innovative light bar at the rear enhances the LBX’s modern and sophisticated look.

Under the bonnet, the LBX packs more of a slap than a punch with a 1.5L 3-cylinder petrol engine, a 1kW battery, and a front axle electric motor coupled with an e-CVT transmission. This setup delivers 100 kW of power and an impressive fuel efficiency of 3.6 L/100 km. The LBX accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 9 seconds, offering a smooth and efficient drive for urban commutes. The optional all-wheel drive variant adds another electric motor at the rear, albeit sacrificing some boot space for added traction, slightly slower acceleration and slightly less efficiency.

Step inside, and the LBX continues to impress with its luxurious interior. The cabin exudes Lexus’s renowned quality, featuring soft-touch materials, leather seats (depending on variant) with heating options, and a user-friendly layout. The intuitive infotainment system offers a plethora of connectivity options, safety features, and customizable settings. The digital instrument cluster, central touch screen, and steering wheel controls provide a seamless driving experience, complemented by advanced driver assistance systems for added safety.

While the rear seating may be a bit tight for adults, the LBX prioritises comfort and practicality for urban dwellers. Ample storage spaces, wireless charging, and premium finishes elevate the driving experience. The compact dimensions excel in city traffic and tight parking spots, making it an ideal choice for daily urban commutes and short trips.

Behind the wheel, the LBX offers a balanced mix of performance and comfort. The off-kilter three-cylinder engine provides a distinctive driving experience, while the CVT gearbox ensures smooth and efficient power delivery. The chassis is nimble and responsive, offering a blend of handling prowess and driving enjoyment on city streets.

The Lexus LBX stands out as a charming and practical crossover that embodies Lexus’s luxury and craftsmanship in a compact package. It’s ideal for urban drivers seeking efficiency, style, and comfort, and the LBX sets a new standard in the competitive crossover segment. With its unique features, efficient hybrid powertrain, and city-friendly design, the LBX offers a compelling option for those looking to experience Lexus luxury in a smaller footprint. But a Tarmac Top tip, we would go for the 2WD powertrain regardless of the ‘mood’.
